HISTORY

The Rockcliffe Place site is located to the East of Birdcage Lane and formed part of the formal gardens of Southwood, a large, detached Victorian dwelling presently used as a function hall and meeting rooms. This is between the highly regarded residential areas of Savile Park and Skircoat Green, within the Savile Park conservation area.

Designation of a conservation area does not preclude development, but it requires a recognition of the area's historical value when planning and making decisions about development. It is a way of flagging up the special qualities of an area and the fact that care and thought are needed to ensure that any work carried out preserves existing buildings which make a positive contribution to the character of the area, wherever possible, and that new development or alterations also preserve or enhance the area's character.

Torsion Homes are pleased to be working closely with Calderdale Council to build a development which meets all the criteria and is sensitive to this unique and historical area.

ROCKCLIFFE PLACE

Historically, the name Birdcage has links to Falconry. Falconry is the ancient art of taking wild quarry with a trained bird of prey.

Originally, Falconry was using a bird of prey as a tool for catching food for the table. Birdcages were literally that: cages for the for birds of prey to to be kept in. There is evidence that falconry was prevalent in the Savile Park and Skircoat Green areas.

The six homes at the development of have all been provisionally named after local historical or notable figures or places .

Monatgu House: George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, became the President of the Board of Trade in 1748.

Wellesley Lodge: The Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) Regimental Association, previously based at Wellesley Park.

Hartley Place: David Hartley, philosopher.

Fairbanks: Jonathan Fairbanks, builder of the Fairbanks House.

Crossley Glade & Porters Croft: In 1857 Sir Francis Crossley, 1st Baronet and John Crossley, of Dean Clough Mills, founded an orphanage. In 1887, Thomas Porter, a Manchester yarn merchant, helped extend the orphanage to include schooling.
